Event Description

Together with the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, we are happy to announce Rupantar - a Trans-Creation of Movements, a 2-day workshop by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Sharmila Biswas. The workshop is aimed at professional dancers in Bangalore.

Dates and timings: August 17, 2024, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. & August 18, 2024, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Venue: Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts

Entry: free but seats are limited and on a first-come-first-served basis. The participants can learn during the workshop how to create new movements and expand their movement vocabulary by incorporating folk and martial arts techniques. Rooted in her extensive study of traditional movements, this workshop by Sharmila Biswas offers an invaluable experience for dancers looking to deepen their practice.

With over three decades of dedication to Odissi Dance and Music, Sharmila Biswas has made significant contributions to the field. She is the Artistic Director of the Odissi Vision & Movement Centre, a premier cultural institution in India. A prominent student of the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, she is a recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and is graded as an ‘Outstanding’ artist by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations. With over three decades of experience, she has performed as the lead dancer in numerous productions, touring extensively in India and internationally. Rupantar is part of NAGARIKA, an online interactive archive on Indian Somatic Expression. This archival project is a collaboration between the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts and Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore.
