SYNOPSIS
A behind-the-scenes look at how a people’s movement against divisive politics takes on an
authoritarian party in power in the Indian Election-2024. Eddelu Karnataka (Wake-up Karnataka)
unites with citizens’ groups across India, dramatically shifting conversation from ‘mandir’
(temple) to ‘mudda’ (people’s problems), making this a closely fought election.
Commissioned by the Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS), Göttingen, Germany, the film
is part of the international documentary series Election Diaries 2024 - nine films chronicling
grassroots campaigns across India that reflect the hope, dissent and resilience at the heart of
Indian democracy.

Benson Isaac will be in conversation with Tara Rao and Sunanda Bhat after the screening.

Sunanda Bhat is an award winning documentary filmmaker. Her films have screened at several
international and Indian film festivals and won awards, prominent ones being - ‘Monde en
Regards’ at the Jean Rouch International Film Festival, Paris; Planet in Focus Film Festival,
Toronto, Golden Conch for Best Documentary at the Mumbai International Film Festival, John
Abraham National Award for Best Documentary. Her film ‘NINGAL ARANAYE KANDO?’ | ‘HAVE
YOU SEEN THE ARANA?’ featured at Musée de l’homme in Paris and was part of the ‘India
Film Week’ at Metropolis Kino, an art-house cinema theatre, in Hamburg, Germany. She is an
active trustee member of Vikalp Bengaluru, a collective of filmmakers that screens the best in
non-fiction cinema in the city.

Tara Rao is a senior Activist and Strategist of Eddelu Karnataka - a people’s political campaign
of over a 100 diverse set of grassroots organisations that is building an active citizens’
movement ground up. Tara has spent many years facilitating collaboration with multi-disciplinary
teams in national and global initiatives for social and environmental justice. She has also been
employing her design skills, shaping action in the areas of rural development, environment and
human rights, working with non-governmental organisations (incl. Amnesty, Greenpeace, WWF)
and various bilateral and multi-lateral organisations in Asia, Africa and beyond.

Benson Isaac enjoys scheming, plotting and figuring out how we can creatively and joyfully
change the world, fight climate change and live peacefully. Dialogue and creating reflective
spaces together with youth from agrarian and artisan communities and young people in
educational institutions have been central to his teaching and activist efforts at St Joseph's
College, Azim Premji University, Samvada and Greenpeace where he has worked over the last
25 years. Benson presently spends time between the CommonGround Project, Vidyaship
University and the Greenpeace CityForward Imaginarium.
