They are accompanied by Gurumurthy Vaidya on tabla. Smadj has been working since last week with two top Bangalore musicians of un- disputed stature, Dr Jyotsna Srikanth, on violin, and Gurumurthy Vaidya, on tabla, to work on a selection of tracks from his previous albums - Selin, Solotronic, Dual-and to compose new ones. They performed at the Sacred Spirit Festival in Nagaur and Jodhpur at the spectacular forts last week. They will also be recording an album due to be released next year.
SMADJ / OUD
Jean-Pierre Smadja (stage name: SMADJ smadj.fr) was born in Tunisia. He arrived in Paris as a child and quickly became one of the cornerstones of the effervescent Parisian scene. Abandoning the guitar for the oud, he made a name for himself beyond the borders of France, thanks to his electro-jazz compositions tinged with orientalism. He handles the acoustic oud as well as the electric oud with pedals and effects, as well as live programming.
Smadj has released numerous solo albums; he has been playing, recording and touring for many years, notably with Mehdi Haddab and the DuOuD project. He is also an artistic director and producer and has been in demand from Turkey - where he lived for 7 years - to Australia (Kirklirili il siniri/Burhan Öçal & The Trakya All Stars featuring Smadj, Laurent de Wilde's "Stories", Arash Sarkechik's "Tout ira bien"...).
Mixing acoustic and electric is Smadj's signature. While assuming strong African roots. While assuming strong African roots, he builds a musical machine that absorbs and even shatters the codes of contemporary music, breakbeat, techno, jazz, and rock. He has collaborated all over the world with Talvin Singh, Ibrahim Maalouf, Erik Truffaz, Malik Mezzadri, Stephano di Baptista, Amit Chatterjee, Rokia Traoré, Mehdi Haddab, Laurent de Wilde, Natacha Atlas, Malouma, Arash Sarkechick.
