Exploring Space and Form in Art and Landscape: A Journey Through Time
 

A talk by Michael Little on Evolution of sculptural space in designed landscape - from the art gallery to the stars.

Inspired by the words of landscape architect James Rose, this talk delves into the relationship between art, space, and the landscape. We trace the evolution of western art, from early paintings and sculptures that strove for realistic representation to the groundbreaking movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Impressionism, Cubism, and Constructivism, which deconstructed form and perspective.

This exploration continues into the 1960s and 1970s with the Earth Art movement, where artists took their work beyond the gallery, drawing inspiration from ancient earthworks and engaging with the landscape itself. As space became a central theme, art and design transformed into powerful mediums of reflection, blending sculpture and environment to evoke wonder and contemplation.

Join us in discovering how ancient and contemporary works demonstrate the power of space—from the smallest natural elements to the vastness of the universe—and its role in shaping aesthetic and philosophical insights in art and design.
 

About Michael Little
 

Michael Little has a Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts, USA. Over the past twenty years he has designed ecological parks, institutional campuses and residential layouts throughout South India.

Works include the Adyar Poonga in Chennai, the  National Law School Bangalore, and the Toyota Ecozone in Bidadi.  He is also the Landscape Architect of many of Good Earth's projects, including Good Earth Malhar.

His unique approach to landscape involves bringing out the indigenous landscape’s true spirit with an artful composition of plants, shaped landforms, natural water bodies, local boulders and integrated structures. His work speaks to the distant landscapes of prehistory and to our contemporary visions of nature and culture.
