This Is How I Draw, published by Pratham Books, invites you inside the curious, creative minds of seven of India’s most beloved picture-book creators. With warmth and honesty, the artists open up their sketchbooks (and their thoughts) to show us how stories are born from everyday life, quiet moments, wild ideas, and everything in between.

Deepa Balsavar lives with one dog and three cats and she’s the runt of the litter. She’s recommended by nine out of ten species.

Ogin Nayam
Picture-Book Maker
Ogin Nayam studied biotechnology and life made him an illustrator. He likes his coffee with a dash of milk and a dream.

Pankaj Saikia
Picture-Book Maker
Pankaj Saikia loves to tell stories through pictures. He also happens to be a fox who lives in a bamboo grove in Assam.

Priya Kuriyan
Picture-Book Maker
Priya Kuriyan is a chronic doodler who lives in Bangalore and loves drawing its people, trees, crows and cats.

Picture-Book Maker
Rajiv Eipe makes picture books, comics and short animation films. He is learning to rotate his head a full 360º from a neighbouring barn owl.

Thejaswi Shivanand is an educator, independent researcher and book curator based in Bengaluru.
