Award-winning documentary Seven Winters in Tehran (Sieben Winter in Teheran), directed by Steffi Niederzoll will be screened next in our series German Cinema in Focus, curated by Shivani. This is the last film in the sub-category Female Auteurs. The film celebrated its world premiere at the 73rd Berlinale and ended up winning the »Golden Lola« for the Best Documentary Film.

Seven Winters in Tehran by Steffi Niederzoll Germany / France | 2023 | col. | 97 min. | Farsi with English subtitles\ Seven Winters in Tehran follows the tragic and harrowing story of Reyhaneh Jabbari, a young Iranian woman who was sentenced to death for the murder of a man she claimed had allegedly attempted to rape her. The film chronicles the seven years of her imprisonment leading up to her execution in 2014.

The documentary combines personal videos, letters, and interviews with Jabbari’s family and supporters to paint a poignant picture of her fight for justice. It highlights the broader issues of women’s rights and the legal injustices in Iran, bringing international attention to her case and the systemic issues within the Iranian judicial system including broader issues of gender-based violence and human rights abuses.

Steffi Niederzoll is a German filmmaker and documentarian known for her socially conscious work. She studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and began her career by focusing on issues related to human rights, social justice, and women's rights. Niederzoll's filmography also includes other projects that address pressing social issues. Her fictional works include ‘Lea’ (2008) and ‘Ein Sommer Lang’ (2006). Creating films that are both artistically compelling and socially relevant, her filmmaking style is characterized by its emotional depth and commitment to uncovering the truth. She has a reputation for creating films that are both artistically compelling and socially relevant, using her platform to advocate for those whose voices are often suppressed or ignored.
