Event Description

Duration: 65 minutes | English William Shakespeare continues to fascinate scholars all over the world even after four and a half centuries. Though we know very little about his wife, Anna Hathaway, most Shakespearean scholars (mostly male) have been rather unkind to her and portrayed her as a rather shrewish, unpleasant woman simply because she was eight years older than the bard, and because Shakespeare left her to go to London just a couple of years after marriage. Anna has been seen as the role model for most of the negative female characters created by Shakespeare. Did Anna seduce an innocent, teenage Shakespeare and force him into marriage? Was this why Shakespeare used the first opportunity to leave her and run off to London? How did Anna Hathaway bring up three children and manage to live alone for over 30 years without a trace of scandal? It’s time we heard her side of the story! Shakespeare’s Wife is a creative exploration that delves into Shakespeare’s life from the perspective of his wife. Drawing inspiration from Robert Nye’s novel Mrs. Shakespeare and the bard’s own sonnets, and bolstered by insights from Germaine Greer’s well-researched Shakespeare’s Wife, this play offers a window into the societal frameworks and the position of women in Elizabethan England. It’s a narrative that seeks to intertwine historical context with a unique, personal viewpoint, shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of Shakespeare’s era.
