This Neelakarshana, we will be screening Shavagalu (Dead Beings), a short film, along with Millennia of Oppression, a photo series that highlights the lives and daily work of mortuary workers. The film and photo series explore how menial and inhumane mortuary work can be, and how this work is often passed down across generations, pushing these workers to the margins of society. They also examine how caste-based oppression continues to evolve and persist despite advances in science and technology.
After the film (27-minute) screening, we will be joined by filmmaker Mani and photographer Arun Vijai Mathavan, whose photographs inspired the film. They will share more about their work, experiences, and the stories behind the film and photo series, followed by a Q&A with participants.
We hope to bring greater visibility to the labour and lived experiences of mortuary workers, whose voices are often overlooked. Together, we will explore how we can better understand these realities and consider ways to support dignity, recognition, and change through our own work and communities.
