Amidst the backdrop of curiosity, a group of mental health professionals came together to create a space to engage in the conversations around mental wellness beyond the confines of therapy rooms, by venturing into the realm of books and movies. These professionals from the Green Oak Initiative are collaborating with BIC to bring book & movie choices that are handpicked and diverse in genre but connected with mental health themes to deepen our conversations.
In ‘Shelf Care,’ our Movie & Book Club, we will alternate between discussing books and movies or TV shows with a mental health theme. Join us for engaging discussions that cater to your literary and cinematic interests.
Our book pick for October is a gut wrenching blend of biography and memoir. Not for the faint hearted, but a definite read for discussion and reflection, The Trauma Cleaner by Sarah Krasnostein, ponders on what it means to live with the memory of great pain. The book alternates between describing the daily work of the protagonist, a transwoman who owns a trauma cleaning business, and her own history of abuse and neglect.
Take your time to read this book and join us for enriching discussion on mental health on the backdrop of social injustice.
