Contemporary Jazz Originals
Abhin Iype, Rohit PS, Sricharan Sunder, Vikramaditya Negi.
SHIFT is a contemporary jazz project led by pianist and composer Abhin Iype. Their sound aims to incorporate a blend of shifting harmonies, singable melodies and a variety of grooves and soundscapes that serve as a canvas for storytelling through improvisation. Although rooted in the jazz tradition, their personal approach to combining their influences through composed passages as well as both structured and free improvisation hopes to bring a fresh perspective or a 'shift' in what the genre can be. Their set, which includes a collection of original compositions written and arranged by bandleader Abhin Iype for his upcoming album, are inspired by his life experiences interacting with different musical cultures and aims to fuse various idioms into something one might be reluctant to call jazz, yet are tied together by the familiar sound of an acoustic jazz ensemble.
