Event Description

Hip-hop started as a revolution: moving the body in unexpected ways, breaking through oppression with expression.

This workshop offers a gentle introduction to the foundations of hip-hop,  from cultural origins to footwork and rhythms. Beginning with a discussion on the history and origins of this style, the dancing that follows is contextualised. Participants will explore hip-hop rhythm and grooves, as well as elements of house dance.

Playful and expressive, this event is for anyone who is interested in learning to dance without pressure.

This event is a part of our programming to celebrate World Dance Day 2026, ‘The Many Lives of Dance’.

Facilitator

Janani Kalasutra
Dancer
Janani Kalasutra is a dedicated student of Indian classical forms including Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Karanas, and Kathak. She is also a yoga teacher. But most importantly, she has been deeply connected to house music for over fifteen years, a relationship that naturally evolved into movement, exploration, and teaching. While she has been dancing for over a decade, she has been actively teaching for the past five years, sharing her practice in a way that is accessible, intuitive, and emotional.

As the founder of SoletoSoul, a house dance retreat, she curates spaces that move beyond studio-based learning into real, lived experiences of dance. She primarily teaches at festivals, gatherings, and social spaces, staying true to the roots of house as a social dance form: making it accessible to anyone who connects with the music, not just those pursuing dance professionally.
