Event Description

“Shakespeare’s Wife” is a solo performance that attempts to see Shakespeare through his wife’s eyes. Written in Kannada by Uday Itagi, translated into English by Laxmi Chandrashekar, an award-winning translator, and directed by Dr Vishwaraj Patil, the play is inspired by Robert Nay’s novel ‘Mrs Shakespeare’ and Shakespeare’s sonnets. It draws information from Germaine Greer’s well-researched work ‘Shakespeare’s Wife’ as well. The play presents Shakespeare’s wife, Anna Hathaway, who speaks of her first meeting with Shakespeare, her marriage, her life after Shakespeare leaves for London, her impressions of London, her husband’s works, and his last days. While doing so, she gives us glimpses of the social structure and the status of women in Elizabethan England. The play reveals the lesser-known aspects of the life of the most celebrated playwright, William Shakespeare, and is being staged on the day after Shakespeare’s birthday. Kriyative Theatre is known for the quality of its productions. The popularity of performer, Laxmi Chandrashekar, is well-known for her bi-lingual solo performances.
