'Tavam', a Kattaikkuttu performance at Ranga Shankara!
Kattaikkuttu, is a vibrant and colourful form of theatre from Tamil Nadu which uses song and dance to tell stories of mythological heroes. The performers have traditionally always been men, and are accompanied by musicians on the Harmonium and the Mridangam.
TAVAM has been imagined as two journeys in opposite directions: on the one hand, Arjuna’s journey to Mount Kailasa in search of the Pasupati weapon and, on the other hand, the journey of five young rural women Kattaikkuttu performers into a socially forbidden, male-only theatre world.
Written by P. Rajagopal and directed by Hanne M. de Bruin, this piece bases itself on the experiences of five women performers, addressing the constraints that prevent women from opting for a career on the stage.
Come watch this brilliant performance by the Kattaikkuttu Sangam.
