We come back to breath, you come back to the breath with us. Breath exists within and without us. A channel through all of humanity and perhaps ecological life, that separates and binds us at the same time. A tapestry nonetheless. Something we never think about until we have to. Why do we run out of breath? Why do we gasp, choke, scream, burp? You need to let go, we need to let go but what if there was nothing to let go of? My breath never lies. But can I fake it? What happens after? Choreographer’s Note: Susspire is an experimental, contemporary dance production that encapsulates personal journeys. It stitches together anecdotes related to the choreographer’s experience recovering from physical, emotional and mental traumas, and dancers’ situational responses and realizations. The piece revolves around that one “long sigh”, taken to relieve pain, cherish senses and mask bitter feelings. Mulling over breathing patterns that reflect emotional and psychological states as well as the effect of disharmony in breath and body on individuals is integral to the work. Susspire tries to capture human circumstances of loss and gain, codependence, loneliness and solitude. The range of images, visual and aural inputs of this homegrown work have been deeply rooted in the process. Improvisation scores, spatial composition and engagement with materials such as a long rope, paper bags and balloons helped the project contain several stories that continue to evolve and expand.
