About Swatantra Talim

Swatantra Talim is a collective working on alternative education with children from rural and government schools for the past 11 years in Lucknow and Sitapur district. With children and the community around them, we weave in elements of stories, scientific temper, participation, expression, making, and tinkering, through creating, inspiring, and empowering them beyond the classroom. The organization is working on a making-centered education in which the focus is on amalgamation of heart, head and hand. (We currently operate three maker-labs catering to 120 children in rural Sitapur & Lucknow district and work with 2000+ children in 13 government schools.) In such an endeavor, the organization is exploring puppetry as a medium in which the students explore different stories, characters, plays and then also engage in a lot of making, puzzles and games around the same. The idea is for children to soak into every side of stories and puppetry - from the making to the performance of it.
