Event Description

There were two poets in 16th and 17th century Punjab, Shah Hussein and Bulleh Shah. Shah Hussein, a weaver, and Bulleh Shah, a scholar! One embraced a young Hindu Brahmin Madholal as his beloved and disciple and is now remembered as Madholal Hussein. The other, born in the Syed lineage, sought a farmer, an Araee’n, as his Murshid, his master. Both spoke of renouncing meaningless rituals to realize the divine. They spoke for the humble, the lowly, the disenfranchised. They dissolved the binaries of gender, religion, class, caste. Both embraced faqeeri (the one who forsakes possessions) and immersed themselves in ishq for the beloved, the divine. Both sang and danced to woo their beloved divine. Tere Ishaq Nachaa’Eeaan | Your Love Has Made Me Dance! The musical renditions of this poetry are interwoven with a contextual narrative around each song, with an intent to highlight the richness of the Punjabi language in which the poetry is written, and to bring in new listeners who are not familiar with the language.
