Textile History of Bangalore by Suresh Jayaram and Jeevan Xavier – 6:30 to 8 PM

Suresh Jayaram is a visual artist, trained as an art historian, arts administrator and curator from Bangalore. He is the Founder of 1.Shanhtiroad Studio an international artist’s Residency.

He is currently involved in art practise, urban mapping, archiving, curation and arts education. His keen interest in environmental and urban developmental issues influences his work. He taught Art History at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, the College of Fine Arts in Bangalore and

later went on to become the Dean from 2005-2007. He obtained his BFA in painting from the College of Fine Arts,Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat

Jeevan Xavier, JLX, is an entrepreneur, designer and artist based in Bangalore, with two decades of experience in the textile industry, and seven years of artistic practice. He’s a self taught and multi disciplinary artist. His subject matter has evolved from affects of his personal encounters with social conflicts. He takes the conflicts back to the people as a piece of work to trigger conversations. Contradictions in behaviour and its dynamics in human interaction intrigue him and inspire his practice of Art and Design.

Sarah is a graduate from The Srishti School of Art Design and Technology, Bangalore. Her passion for textiles began there. Sarah’s work involves using Batik and Shibori techniques.She designs wearable textiles and home furnishings under the brand name ‘Umoya’.

“I started Umoya in the year 2007. It's creation allowed me to explore my love for colour and texture, all the while paying homage to an ancient Japanese method of resist dyeing fabric, Shibori. The process involved allows for experiments, which has always appealed to me. All of my learning came from years of practice and research. The products you see on this site are all unique because they are the results of that time and effort.

In the year 2015, my husband joined me on my Shibori journey, and we took my little business out of it’s shed, and slowly made it what it is today, A place where you can find unique, elegant and affordable Shibori work. Here you can find grand sarees and dupattas to keyring pouches and whimsical stuffed toys.

Our family now consists of 6 wonderful women who have been trained in the fine art of Shibori. Our is a very hands on venture. If you visit our unit, you will find my husband dyeing, the ladies stitching and me in a corner, dreaming up new designs. Nothing is manufactured at Umoya, it is crafted with love and care.”
