Event Description

The 12th Attakkalari India Biennial presents Your Symptoms, And Flight - A Double Bill by Melancholy Dance Company from South Korea on 25 January 2026 at 7pm as part of BLR Hubba at the Prestige Centre for Performing Arts, Bengaluru.

The double bill performance, which marks the finale of the Bengaluru Habba Festival, includes the pieces “Your Symptoms” and “Flight”. This event is supported by the InKo Centre, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Korea, Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange, and K-arts On The Go.

Your Symptoms directly addresses the identity crisis and social issues faced by modern individuals, expanding the boundaries of perception and sensation. This work intricately expresses the loneliness and emotional unease of modern individuals and, through a deep exploration of universal human sentiments, proposes a fresh mode of contemporary stage expression that encourages expanded reflection and thought.

Flight depicts the continuous movement between effort, failure and persistence that shapes human striving. The piece looks at moments of exhaustion, collapse and a gradual act of moving towards one’s aspiration. Through leaps and suspended gestures, the choreography articulates the impulse to rise beyond the physical & psychological limitations.

JEONG CHEOL IN, founder and artistic director of Melancholy Dance Company, made his choreographic debut in 2014 with Free Fall. His major works include Flight (2016), 0g (2018), Übermensch (2019), Your Symptoms (2020), Mobility (2021), and Unprotected (2022). Jeong's choreographic approach is rooted in a deep investigation of physicality. Through a nuanced vocabulary of movement, he examines the emotional and psychological layers of the human condition. Both as a performer and creator, he is recognized for his sincerity, precision, and artistic rigor qualities that have garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades.

The Movement Masterclass facilitated by the Melancholy Dance Company from South Korea, is structured across two interconnected sessions that centre embodiment, connection and creative enquiry. The first class explores relational movement through physical dialogue, moving from body to body contact part- based and point-based connections. These practices cultivate trust, empathy, heightened awareness as well as expanding spatial axes. The second class  engages with rhythm and musicality as catalysts for movement. This class extends an invitation to participants to interpret beats through locomotion and improvisation. Through guided exercises and original movement phrases dancers are invited to develop personalised combinations, integrate technique and expand their individual movement vocabularies.

Attakkalari India Biennial 2025-26

Marking the 25th Anniversary year of Attakkalari, the 12th edition of the Attakkalari India Biennial attends to reconnection, reflection and innovation through dance. This edition foregrounds practices that restore the body to presence, returning it from various forms of alienations that emerge from the contemporary. The Attakkalari India Biennial 2025-26 turns its gaze toward the intricacies of human relationships and the subtle conversations between our bodies and the spaces we move through. Architecture, cities, landscapes, each becomes a living archive of events and memories, shaping our collective conscience as they imprint themselves on us. The performances that this biennial curates are from across the world  and trace the paths of bodies travelling through cities, countries and continents, offering evocative testimonies of the crystalised moments where place and person become inseparable. These artistic explorations reveal exquisite insights into the scale, density and rhythm that define dance, embodiment and existence itself.
