As consumers prefer omni-channel (combination of online and offline retail) shopping, firms have been forced to follow. Yet, the gig economy is unprofitable, most retailers find online sales to be earnings dilutive, and even Amazon’s online retail operations continue to be loss making after 30 years. The presentation articulates the challenges of online sales, when ecommerce can be profitable, and the general 4P (people, planet, profits, and privacy) problems facing the last mile delivery models. Based on the book Clash: Amazon versus Walmart, this session will explore what the prognosis is for two of the largest companies in the world.
