The Arab Spring started in Tunisia in December 2010. It led to the fall of dictators who held power for decades. The first to fall was Ben Ali in Tunisia, followed by Mubarak in Egypt, and Saleh in Yemen in 2012. Algeria’s Bouteflika and Sudan’s Al Bashir fell in 2019. However, in no Arab country, even in Tunisia that showed promise, has democracy been established. Tunisia showed promise for a while and Libya has two governments. The author takes a close look at the human cost of the Arab Spring, a theme often neglected by scholars who focus on the pecking order among the contestant states. The book examines the wellsprings and trajectories of the Arab Spring, reasons for its failure, the role of the external powers adding fuel to the fire, the sincere and insincere efforts for ending the civil wars, and the efforts of the United Nations, often in vain to arrange for a cease-fire. The author, Ambassador K P Fabian, will engage in a conversation with Latha Reddy, which will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.
