Event Description

Prison Aid + Action Research’s (PAAR) vision says it clearly: To make open prisons the norm and abolish the practice of caging humans, eradicate retributive and violent forms of punishment—that are proven not to deter crime—abolish the death penalty and end long sentencing practices, such as life sentencing. We can build a system of justice that upholds the principles of human equality and dignity. Open prisons are one of the best possible methods for the social reintegration of prisoners. “I’ve advocated for open prisons throughout India. We look forward to end cruel and ineffective practice of caging people.” says Smita Chakraburtty, founder of PAAR and long time campaigner for Open Prisons. In this session Smita Chakraburtty will present her research and work at PAAR and engage in a conversation with S.T. Ramesh. This will be followed by a Q&A session.
