Event Description

It is no secret that controversies around the river Cauvery have existed for centuries. The sharing of its waters between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has resulted in claims and counter-claims to the extent that we have forgotten the many wars that have been fought and the people responsible for the dispute.

1807 may be regarded as the genesis of the issue when Tanjavur objected to the restoration of tanks and river streams taken up by the erstwhile Mysore state to rejuvenate irrigation sources for agriculture. Agreements and legal proceedings with a history of over a hundred years have kept the issues alive.

This session will carry a presentation that is based on historical facts and documents that extend to larger and more important issues like the perennial problem of floods and drought. The solution lies in water management where we as a nation seem to have failed. The talk explores these crucial questions around the Cauvery dispute and water management. A Q&A with the audience will follow.
