Event Description

The Dam Jawn is a band consisting of five musicians from the Amsterdam Jazz scene who metthrough a shared experience in the United States. They found their collective voice by composing and arranging their own original music inspired by the jazz scene from the city of Philadelphia. Although all five live and are active in Amsterdam, the Quintet is very international. Martín Díaz (altosax) and Joan Fort (guitar) were born in Barcelona, Spain. Philip Lewin (bass) in Stuttgart, Germanyand Nitin Parree (drums) as well as Frank Groenendijk (tenor saxophone) are from the Netherlands. Their debut album features legendary alto saxophonist Dick Oatts, who also guided them through the process of writing, arranging and rehearsing their own music. The Dam Jawn have come together and shaped their own sound, inspired by the energy and feeling of today’s Philadelphia Jazz scene, as well as its rich musical past.

Martin Diaz Saxophone & Composition

The Catalan saxophonist and composer Martín Díaz is at the forefront of his generation of jazz musicians. Residing in Amsterdam he leads his own Martin Diaz Quintet project which won one of the most prestigious awards in the American Jazz scene, Downbeat Award 2020, with a special mention as an outstanding soloist and the first prize of the Leiden Jazz Awards. His first album as a leader Identities, landed signing a contract with the famous Catalan record label Fresh Sound, with which other international artists began their musical careers, such as Ambrose Akimusire, Giulia Valle and others. He is also part of the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra, a legendary big band that recorded with Phill Woods, John Fadis and Jesse Davis in New York. At the age of 26, he has recorded nine albums and played all over the peninsula, and now he is beginning to leave his print in the Netherlands, where he has already recorded and played with the best musicians of the country, such as Gideon Tazelaar, Ben Van Gelder, Jasper Blom, Benjamin Herman and Simon Rigter.

Frank Groenendijk Saxophone

Frank Groenendijk is a tenor saxophonist from Rotterdam, born in 1996. He started playing the tenor saxophone at nine and studied jazz at conservatories in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Frank is a versatile saxophone player and is involved in diverse projects like The Dam Jawn (modern jazz), The Hi-Stakes (rhythm and blues) and the Dutch Jazz Collective (big band).

Joan Fort Guitar

Joan Fort is a Catalan musician and guitarist based in Amsterdam (NL), where he graduated from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and Temple University of Philadelphia with a Master’s Degree in Jazz Guitar Performance. In 2022, he received both the Holland Outgoing Scholarship and Internalisation Funds to go on exchange to one of the most considered universities in the US, Temple University in Philadelphia. During his musical career, Joan has been fortunate to play with renowned musicians such as Dick Oatts, Bill McHenry, Benjamin Herman, Jasper Blom, Eric Ineke, Gianni Gagliardi, Jo Krause, Tim Brey, Horacio Fumero, Aldo Caviglia, Rita Payés, Mario Rossy, Masa Kamaguchi, Sanna Van Vliet, Eladio Reinón, Benet Palet, Gideon Tazelaar, David Xirgu, Ian Cleaver, Menno Daams, David Lucácks, and Magalí Datzira. He is currently leading and being a sideman of bands as The Dam Jawn feat. Dick Oatts, Eladio Reinón & Joan Fort Quartet, Tomek van Leeuwen Quintet, Joan Fort Quartet, Magalí Datzira & Joan Fort duo, Rita Payés & Joan Fort duo, LINE UP Quintet and the Mar Vilaseca Group.

Philip Lewin Bass

Originally from Stuttgart, Germany, Philip has been passionate about music from an early age. He was exposed to various genres through concerts and his parents’ record collection. He started his musical journey with classical piano lessons at the age of six, later transitioning to the guitar. Intrigued by the bass and it’s role in jazz bands, he switched to the electric bass and then to the double bass. Philip pursued his music education at the Hochschule für Musik Nuremberg and later at CODARTS in Rotterdam and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he obtained his master’s degree. To further his skills, Philip sought private lessons from acclaimed bassists Joe Martin, Orlando LeFleming and Or Bareket during his stay in New York in 2018. He also had the opportunity study with the great bassist David Wongas well as Dick Oatts, Joe Magnarelli and Tim Warfield. Currently based in Amsterdam, Philip actively performs at notable festivals like North Sea Jazz and Grachtenfestival Amsterdam and renowned venues such as the Bimhuis.

Nitin Parree Drums

Nitin Parree has recently finished his masters at the Conservatory van Amsterdam and did his master research about the comping of the drummer of Miles Davis in the 1960’s time period, which is Tony Williams. Nitin also went on exchange in spring 2022 to Temple University in Philadelphia to study under the tutelage of Justin Faulkner, the drummer of the Branford Marsalis Quartet. There he also had lessons with Dick Oatts, Joe Magnerelli, John Swana and Byron Landham. He also recorded an album with Dick Oatts in Philadelphia, called Master St, with the band The Dam Jawn. This album released in May 2023 which also featured an original composition of Nitin called “Venango”. Being an alumnus of the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Nitin has had lessons from Eric Ineke, Martijn Vink, Mark Schilders, Marcel Serierse. Stefan Kruger and Felix Schlarmann. In the past Nitin played at festivals and venues such as Bimhuis, Muziekgebouw aan T’ij, Wonderfeel festival, BIRD, Amersfoort Jazz Festival, Grachtenfestival, Cutting Edge, Brebl and the Dakota Jazz Festival.
