he Gallery at Maya, a Slow Living Restaurant and Art Gallery in Jayanagar presents “Susegad” a collection of Abstract Paintings by Darpan Kaur, curated by Samira Sheth.

Meet The Artist:

SUSEGAD:
Susegad is a word synonymous with Goa. It is a way of life and an attitude that Goans choose to adopt. It loosely translates to a relaxed pace, of going with the flow and living in the moment. This series pays homage to all of that. The pieces are an ode to being perfectly imperfect, without inhibitions.

The colors surge and swell, revealing themselves in unlikely places, evocative of luminescent surfaces and hidden depths, in quiet flow together. The play of cadence and color, tonality and mood entice us to enter these delightful worlds where nothing is obvious; everything is possible and the everyday is made extraordinary. With rough textures and free marks, the artworks stand for the freedom to truly be yourself. They lead one to tranquility and a sense of joy.

We long to find our own susegad, that elusive feeling of contentment and joy, relaxation and peace, our own ‘happy place’ in these worlds of visual delight.

Darpan Kaur

It takes imagination to cope with reality, and Darpan Kaur has plenty. Much like the fairy tale worlds, the abstractionist is inspired by, Darpan’s canvases transport us into lands of mystery and wonder where anything is possible.

Every new artwork is an anticipation of what the canvas will choose to reveal.

Her pieces are lyrical and put forth a magical dimension to get lost and found in at the same time. Darpan mindfully and passionately offers a safe space for your imagination and ideas through her art. Darpan sets forth on her adventures into the unknown with a single mark on an empty canvas, following the lines and blotches, smears and daubs where they want to take her, ending in a deeply fulfilling happy ever after where it all comes together with a touch of magic.

Darpan says, "I've always loved the abstract and I've always been interested in differences. In my self-work I've been exploring replacing the 'or' with an 'and' and that's what I hope to bring into my art as well. I love using non-brush art tools and I love mark-making. There's a particular taste in the mouth when love, joy, and passion collide and Art does that for me."
