What is life? Can it spontaneously arise from a mixture of chemicals? Explore these questions and more in a workshop hosted by Nayan Chakraborty and Shashi Thutupalli from the National Centre for Biological Sciences.
Participants will use laboratory equipment and chemicals to recreate an experiment that examines the origins of life.
This event will delve into the live experiment on display at Sci560, inspired by the pioneering work of chemists Krishna Bahadur and S. Ranganayaki. Between the 1950s and 1970s, they conducted groundbreaking experiments at the University of Allahabad, focusing on the spontaneous emergence of life-like properties from "abiotic soups" of carbon-based molecules, ammonia, phosphates, and mineral salts. They claimed that when these mixtures were exposed to sunlight, they produced spherical units called 'jeewanu,' which exhibited basic life properties such as metabolism, growth, and division. Join us to experiment, learn, and engage with the fascinating science behind the origins of life!
