2026 will be thirty years since the first Indian English independent film from Bangalore was shot in the Cooke Town  with an all Bangalore cast and crew.

Winner of the ‘Aravindan Puruskaaram’ and ‘The Gollapudi Srinivas National Award’ for best debutant director, The Outhouse revolves around a young Anglo – Indian housewife, Priscilla, seeking financial independence trapped in marital discord.

Moving from small town Kolar Gold Fields to big city Bangalore, she’s determined to find her individual identity with support from a financially independent sister and a kind hearted Bengali landlady.

The film was written, produced and directed by Leslie Carvalho, and was shot by national award winning cinematographer S. Ramachandra of Malgudi Days‘ fame and edited by M.N.Swamy, a national award winner. Music was composed by Gerard Machado, a leading Jazz and fusion guitarist and music director.

The cast includes an all Bangalore stage and theatre artists. Priscilla Corner, Judith Roby Bidapa, Ratan Thakore Grant, Chippy Ganjee, Poile Sengupta and Robin Arthur Corner Jr.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director.

Leslie Carvalho

Carvalho went to school and college in Bangalore and then studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. He wrote, produced and directed, The Outhouse and A Woman Too Many. He was awarded the ‘Aravindan Puruskaaram’ and ‘The Gollapudi Srinivas National Award’ for best debutant director for The Outhouse.

His debut novel, Smoke on the Backwaters has been just published by Anglo – Ink. He was chairman of the jury for selecting films for The Bengaluru International Film Festival and has been on several National Film and State Awards and The Indian Panorama for selecting films for the International Film Festival of India.

He teaches film at Mount Carmel College, and is also a gifted painter and enjoys teaching German and tennis.
