The Songs that are Abhang’ celebrates the compositions of five Women Bhakti Saints, juxtaposing Mirabai’s Bhajan with Andal’s Pasuram, Akka’s Vachana, Soyara’s Abhang or Vakhs of Lalleshwari. Abhang, here refers to the indestructibility of these songs, the relevance of each one of them even after more than thousand years. The ninety minute presentation of music ranging from the devotional to the erotic to protest songs will be presented in Hindustani classical and semi classical format. Performers Rama Sundar Ranganathan Vocals Rama Sundar Ranganathan is a shagird of the late Vidushi Shanti Sharma and Pt. Tejpal Singh (Singh Bandhu), the foremost living disciple of Ustad Amir Khan Saheb of Indore Gharana. She is an All India Radio “A” grade artist and has sung at renowned festivals hosted by HCL, Teamwork Arts, Spic Macay, Kalashree foundation, Swaranjali, Pracheen Kala Kendra, Gunijan Sabha, Dilli Darbar amongst many others. She has also collaborated with European sound engineers to record a meditative piece called “With Love, From India” for the website mynoise.net. Rama specialises in content-rich and thematic concerts. She has created and performed multiple themes such as “The Songs that are Abhang”, “The Colours of Bhakti” and “Music of the Charkha“ which was featured by BIC last year. Rama has a post graduate degree in Commerce from Bombay University and an MBA from London Business School. She has however chosen music as her field of work. She is currently a PhD scholar studying the poetry and music of women Bhakti saints of medieval India under the guidance of Padma Bhushan Dr. L Subramaniam. The District Administration of Gurgaon has conferred the Kala Ratan Samman award 2023 for her contributions to Hindustani Classical music. Sagar Bharathraj Tabla Sagar is the son and disciple of Shri Bharathraj Venkat Rao from Calicut, Kerala, who is a senior disciple of Shri. Omkar Gulvady. After coming to Bangalore for his post graduation in chemical engineering, Sagar learnt under Shri Ravindra Yavagal for a short while and has also undergone vocal accompaniment training from Smt. Aditi Upadhya. Sagar is a research scientist with a chemical engineering background. A triple gold medalist for Btech from NIT Calicut, Mtech & PhD from IISc Bangalore, Sagar was also awarded the National Award for the best Mtech thesis in chemical engineering. He is currently a research scientist with numerous international patents and publications to his credit, in the renewable energy and electric vehicles arena, working with Samsung Semiconductor India RnD, Bangalore. Soorya Upadhyaya Harmonium Soorya Upadhyaya is a disciple of Vidwan Ananth Bhagwath and Pandit Ravindra Katoti.
