Event Description

We hum these lines. We are moved by them. And yet, for the most part, we hear only their surface – the melody, the ache, the obvious sense of the words. Underneath sits a second poem, and often a third: a borrowed image, a buried argument, a reply to someone who wrote a hundred years earlier.

The Unheard Line is an invitation to hear that lower register. It is not a lecture on prosody, and it asks for no prior training. It is closer to a guided learning – the kind where a familiar song is played, paused, and opened, until the room realises it has been living inside a meaning it never quite saw.

Urdu is the spine of the session, with room for the progressive Hindi poets, the other tongues of India, and modern world poetry. Ghalib, Mir, Momin, Hasrat Mohani, Faiz, Firaq, Dushyant Kumar, Nida Fazli, Gulzar, Kaifi Azmi, and other poets. Join us for a guided workshop for the appreciation of poetry.

About the host: Samartha Vashishtha is a bilingual poet, writer, and translator, the author of four published volumes across Hindi and English, and the third generation of a family of poets.
