Event Description

Three of the six Hindustani gharanas, each with its own preferred repertoire of raags, taals, compositions and improvisation techniques.

This evening, Mukul Kulkarni moves through each tradition. Before every item, he names the stylistic sources of what he is presenting, illuminating the differences between traditions. He is accompanied by Sagar Bharatraj on tabla and Niranjan ‘Bharat’ Hegde on harmonium. A performance built around a superbly trained artiste, deeply exploring raags, going somewhere that no one, not even he, can predict.

Mukul Kulkarni
Vocals
Mukul Kulkarni is a distinguished Hindustani vocalist specialising in khayal, tappa and tarana. He synthesises three of today’s six main khayal styles, namely Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur. He is a top-grade AIR artiste, with superlative training for more than three decades under five gurus, including the maestros Pandit Sharad Sathe and Pandit Arun Kashalkar. Among his contemporaries, he is known for his deep and original aalaaps, his impressive and creative use of rhythm and his vast repertoire of raags, taals, compositions, compositional forms and improvisation techniques, and a voice with a simultaneously rich, sweet and resonant timbre. For nearly fifteen years, he has been a visiting musician at the UK’s Saaz Music.

Sagar Bharatraj

Sagar Bharatraj is an accomplished and sought-after tabla player who has trained under his father, Bharathraj Venkat Rao, and been guided by the table stalwart Ravindra Yavagal and the vocalist Aditi Upadhya.

Niranjan ‘Bharat’ Hegde
Harmonium
Niranjan ‘Bharat’ Hegde is a fine harmonium player who has trained under Shambhu Bhat, Prakash Hegde and Vasanth Kanakapur. He is now learning from Sudhir Nayak. He known for both his accompaniment and solo performances.
