Event Description

The last screening in the series German Kino at Suchitra in 2024 is Toubab, directed by Florian Dietrich.

Freshly released from prison, Babtou is handcuffed again by law enforcement officers on the very evening of his welcome party, where everything goes thoroughly wrong. This time, however, the consequences could hardly be more drastic, because although he was born in Germany and his home is Frankfurt, Babtou is to be deported to his “home country” Senegal. He only knows Senegal from his father's stories. To prevent the deportation, Babtou and his buddy Dennis are willing to do anything, including getting married!

Florian Dietrich was born in Wiesbaden in 1986. After graduating from high school, he worked as an assistant director at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden and studied media dramaturgy in Mainz from 2005 to 2007. From 2007, he studied directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin and Tel Aviv University.

He presented his first short film GhettoLoveGrief at the Berlin International Short Film Festival in 2011. His feature film debut Toubab premiered in September 2020 at the Filmkunstmesse Leipzig and was released in German cinemas on September 23, 2021. Toubab is Dietrich's final project at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin.
