Event Description

Plants are travellers. They ride on the wind, sail across seas, some arrive quietly, uninvited, some are carried with intention, planted as symbols of power, beauty, prosperity, and survival.
Through their movements, plants shape cities, alter ecologies, and intertwine themselves with human lives.

Travelling Plants is a transdisciplinary project initiated by the Goethe-Institut Chennai, in collaboration with the Alliance Française of Madras and the Institut Français de Pondichéry.
The Exhibition, comprising four artistic positions, curated by Lina Vincent,  journeyed through Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Colombo, enhanced by fresh local input at each station.

In Bangalore, curator Suresh Jayaram extends these explorations, grounding them in the city's layered horticultural past and its urgent contemporary realities.

Bangalore itself is a living archive of plant migration.
The Charbagh of Lalbagh, envisioned by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, once echoed the gardens of Persia.
The British seeded the city with exotic species, seeking shade and ornament, while the German horticulturist Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel and others imagined horticultural futures that still unfold today.

In this Exhibition, the artists curated by Suresh Jayaram follow the echoes of these botanical journeys, exploring stories of migration and memory, displacement and resilience.
Plants here are protagonists and keepers of histories, witnesses to exchange, exploration and exploitation.

In Bangalore, Travelling Plants is presented by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, in collaboration with Alliance Française de Bangalore.
