In the late 1970s, a quiet, determined explorer set out alone along India’s vast and unforgiving coastlines. What he discovered would change the future of sea turtle conservation in India forever.
Turtle Walker is a 75-minute feature documentary directed by Taira Malaney that tells the extraordinary true story of Satish Bhaskar — affectionately known as “Mr. Sea Turtle.” From being stranded on uninhabited islands to uncovering India’s first recorded leatherback turtle nesting sites, Bhaskar’s life was defined by courage, obsession, and an unwavering commitment to protecting one of the ocean’s most ancient creatures.
But the story doesn’t end with discovery.
In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami wiped out entire nesting beaches, forcing a haunting question: What happens to sea turtles when their homes disappear? At 73, and battling illness, Bhaskar sets out on one final journey — confronting loss, change, and the fragile resilience of nature.
Blending breathtaking cinematography, intimate storytelling, and powerful recreations inspired by films like Life of Pi, Turtle Walker is not just a conservation story. It’s a deeply human story about curiosity, perseverance, and hope in the face of environmental uncertainty.
Presented by Tiger Baby (Zoya Akhtar & Reema Kagti) and Ceres In association with HHMI Tangled Bank Studios An Emaho Films production, the film brings together award-winning filmmakers and scientists to tell a story that is both personal and planetary.
