Event Description

Adding to its many successful digital ventures is Ranga Shankara's latest digital programme - "View from the 4th Row". Single-camera recordings of plays, recorded as an academic archiving exercise, will now be made available to audiences. The programme was launched last week with the streaming of The Indian Ensemble's 'Afterlife of Birds', written and directed by renowned playwright and director Abhishek Majumdar.

This week, audiences will be treated to a recording of Kriyative Theatre's 'Gundayana'. ‘Gundayana’ is a unique comedy in which the protagonist himself never appears on stage, but is spoken about by ten different characters portrayed by only two actors. The Kannada play is based on 'Chakradrushti' written by renowned Kannada humourist Na.Kasturi. ‘Gundayana’ is designed and directed by Joseph, a Ninasam graduate who has made waves in theatre circles with his innovative productions. The novel has been adapted to the stage by Laxmi Chandrashekar. The play stars theatre veterans Sundar and Laxmi Chandrashekar, with internationally-reputed violinist H.N.Bhaskar playing Gajanana Naik’s tunes, lighting by Muddanna Shirahatti and make-up by Ramakrishna Kannarapadi. On stage, 'Gundayana' has seen over 40 shows.

'Gundayana' will be available for viewing on Ranga Shankara's YouTube channel (RangaShankaraTheatre) and is free of cost. The play will remain on the channel till Thu, 20 May 2021.

'Gundayana' will be followed by other plays such as 'Sangeet Baari', 'Uney Purey Shahar Ek', 'Aao Saathi Sapna Dekhen', and 'Draupadi Tugil', in the 'View from the 4th Row' programme. One play will premiere every Friday on Ranga Shankara's YouTube channel. The plays have been curated carefully to ensure the viewers get a variety in terms of age, language and format.
