Adding to its many successful digital ventures is Ranga Shankara's latest digital programme - "View from the 4th Row". Single-camera recordings of plays, recorded as an academic archiving exercise, will now be made available to audiences.
In its third week, 'View from the 4th Row' brings to audiences Kali Billi Productions' 'Sangeet Bari'. 'Sangeet Bari' presents live Lavani performances, showcasing different types and styles of the art form. The performance is set to old and new Lavani songs and is performed by some of the foremost exponents of Lavani. 'Sangeet Bari' combines multiple narratives such as the Lavani woman, the musicians, the customer, and the researcher/ narrator. The production brings to the fore the plight of traditional Lavani artistes, many of whom are either unknown or forgotten. 'Sangeet Bari' attempts to portray them as artistes and human beings and break the popular image of 'seductress' or 'victim' that is associated with these artistes.
Lavani has been a part of Maharashtra’s cultural milieu for several centuries. It is a performance that breaks the fourth wall and entertains, engages, and interacts with the audience. 'Sangeet Bari' exposes audiences to this rich art form, while creating a platform for the Lavani woman to tell us her story. The production is written by Bhushan Korgaonkar and directed by Savitri Medhatul. It features artistes Pushpa Satarkar, Akanksha Kadam, Latabai Waikar, Chandrakant Lakhe, Vinayak Jawale, Sumit Kudalkar, Savitri, Bhushan, and Sangeet Natak Academy Award winner Shakuntalabai Nagarkar.
'Sangeet Bari' will be available for viewing on Ranga Shankara's YouTube channel (RangaShankaraTheatre) from 10 AM on Fri, 21 May 2021. It will remain on the channel till 11:59 PM IST on Thu, 27th May 2021. The piece can be viewed free of cost.
'Sangeet Bari' will be followed by other plays such as 'Uney Purey Shahar Ek', 'Aao Saathi Sapna Dekhen', and 'Draupadi Tugil', in the 'View from the 4th Row' programme. A new play premieres every Friday on Ranga Shankara's YouTube channel. The plays have been curated carefully to ensure the viewers get a variety in terms of age, language, and format.
