Event Description

Kantha is the flagship subfestival at BLR Hubba 2024- 16 days of music at the historic Freedom Park, celebrating music from across Asia that breaks boundaries. Between 30th November and 15th December, weekends will see 3 artists play each day, while weekdays will have 2 artists each day.

About the Performance   

The Hyderabad based Warsi brothers, Nazeer Ahmed Khan and Naseer Ahmed Khan, have been immersed in the soundscapes of Qawwali since birth. The brothers received their training in music from their father Ustad Zaheer Ahmed Khan Warsi & grand father Padmasri Aziz Ahmed Khan Warsi who were both celebrated Qawwals and classical singers.The Warsi brothers are flag bearers of the ‘gayaki’ tradition of the Delhi gharana known for its melody and mesmeric improvisations. The Delhi gharana is noted for its melody and improvisation and the Warsi brothers are recognised specially for their traditional Sufiana Qawwali, Ghazal, Thumri, Bhajan and classical Bandish.   

Tracing their ancestry from Khwaja Mohinuddin Chishti, to Mughal courts, to the court of the Nizam of Hyderabad, the Warsi brothers are inheritors of a rich cultural repository. Their musical repertoire is textured with many histories and stories and has woven in contemporary influences. They sing compositions of Amir Khusro, Bulle Shah, weaver poet Kabir Das and many others   

Together with their troupe, the Warsi brothers preserve and carry on their 900 year old tradition of Qawwali and are renowned for their traditional Sufiana Qawwali. They jointly received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for their contribution to Qawwali in 2014.
