Event Description

Language: English

The Ramayana remembers everyone. Just not equally.

In six monologues, Gowri Ramnarayan fashions the women the epic found convenient to sideline into individuals in their own right, each voice as complex, as intelligent, and as worthy of attention as Sita’s own.

Some kept faith across impossible distances: Urmila, who waited while her husband followed his brother into exile; Shanta, Rama’s sister, given away twice and nearly forgotten.

Some loved with a ferocity that changed everything: Manthara, whose devotion to Kaikeyi set the entire epic in motion; Surpanakha, who desired without apology and made the epic answer for what it did to her.

And some endured what would have broken lesser women: Tara, who survived her husband’s murder and stayed to protect her son; Mandodari, who watched Ravana take his entire world down with him and bore witness to the end with her eyes open.

Six women. Finally, the floor is theirs.

This event is a part of our programming to celebrate International Women’s Day. Music, theatre, and conversation: by women, for everyone.
