Invisible women, seen through the lens of wit, humour and dignity.

Domestic workers, farmers, mothers, ASHA workers, dancers, and organisers all labour to sustain society but are rarely acknowledged. Working Girls is a vivid, genre-defying documentary that traverses India to uncover the invisible yet essential work performed by women. From care work and domestic work to surrogacy and sex work, the film challenges dominant ideas about labour, value, and visibility.

It was filmed across the country in Kolkata, Mumbai, Shillong, Latur, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad and Madurai. The film is directed by Paromita Vohra and created in collaboration with the Laws of Social Reproduction project. The Laws of Social Reproduction project, led by Prabha Kotiswaran at King’s College London, draws on feminist legal theory to study women’s reproductive labour, and how law renders this labour invisible, proposing reform toward economic justice for women.

Paromita Vohra
Filmmaker & Writer
Paromita Vohra is a filmmaker and writer whose body of truth-telling, kinetic, and sensuous work explores feminism, gender, desire, urban life, and popular culture. She has directed documentaries including Unlimited Girls, Q2P, Where’s Sandra?, and Working Girls. She has written for the film Khamosh Pani/Silent Waters, the comic Priya’s Mirror, the play Ishqiya Dharavi Ishtyle, and the weekly newspaper column Paronormal Activity, now in its fifteenth year. In 2015, she founded Agents of Ishq, a pioneering digital platform transforming conversations on sex, love, and desire in India.

Anuja Ghoshalkar
Theatre maker & Founder, Drama Queen
Anuja Ghosalkar is a theatremaker and founder of Drama Queen, a documentary arts company in India active since 2015. Her interdisciplinary practice engages counterhistories, archival absences, gender, and transnational collaboration. Based in Bangalore, her work has been presented internationally, including at the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, metaLAB at Harvard, and Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin. She has collaborated with companies including Gob Squad and FlinnWorks, and is coeditor of Documentary Theatre in India: Assembling Publics, Performing Politics (Transcript Verlag, Germany).
