Event Description

When Ananya Prasad rowed solo and unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean, she faced physical and mental challenges, including encountering killer whales, isolation, colossal waves, and having to jump into 5-kilometre deep water to fix a broken boat rudder in the middle of the ocean. Overcoming a fear of water to do all of this, Ananya talks about the lessons she learned through this journey of resilience and self-discovery that are applicable to all aspects of life. Ananya became the first Indian woman to complete this challenge and came 2nd in the solo category of the event, even as the only female solo participant.

A Q&A with the audience will follow.

Born in India and raised in the UK, Ananya Prasad grew up with a passion for the outdoors and adventure sport. On February 1, 2025, Ananya became the first Indian woman to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, completely unsupported, spending 52 days alone at sea. She faced many challenges, including things breaking on the boat, 25-foot waves, and the forces of the Atlantic.

Ananya recently completed a Master’s in Economics from the University of Sheffield. She has previously worked in finance and marketing in the UK, and has also worked in public policy for the South Yorkshire mayor. She will continue working in public policy in the UK after the conclusion of the rowing challenge.

Growing up, a lack of representation in the outdoors was very apparent to her and by participating in the rowing challenge, she hopes to encourage more diversity in adventure sport and rowing for everyone, but especially for women.

Ananya is fundraising for two charities dear to her, the Mental Health Foundation UK, who focus on prevention of mental ill health through community led programmes, and Deenabandhu Trust, a children’s home and school in Chamarajanagar, providing security, education and scholarship programmes to underprivileged children, founded by her uncle, GS Jaydev. Ananya is also the granddaughter of Rashtrakavi poet G S Shivarudrappa.
