Event Description

Four poets from Bangalore come together for an evening of poetry in English and Hindi, exploring how language moves across geographies, experiences, and ways of seeing. Their poems reveal how words can hold multiple realities, opening up Worlds Within Worlds through translation, memory, and imagination.

The event will feature readings from Perennial: The Red River Book of 21st Century Hindi Poetry (Red River, 2025), edited by Sourav Roy and Tuhin Bhowal; So That You Know (HarperCollins, 2025) by Mani Rao; and The Book of Blue (Red River, 2024) by Atreyee Majumder. Together, these books offer distinct yet connected perspectives on how poetry continues to shape and question the world we inhabit.

The session will conclude with a conversation among the poets and an audience Q&A.

Speakers

Atreyee Majumder
Anthropologist, Poet & Writer
Atreyee Majumder is an anthropologist, poet, and writer based in Bangalore. She earned her doctoral degree from Yale University (2014). She has been an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Jackman Humanities Institute, University of Toronto (2016-18). She has published widely in academic and popular venues including the South Asian Multidisciplinary Academic Journal, Religions, Economic and Political Weekly, 3AM magazine, India Today, Article 14, Anthropology & Humanism, Philosophy in Review, Religions, and LSE Review of Books.  Her poems and short fiction have been featured in RIC Journal, Bombay Review, Bangalore Review, Gulmohur Quarterly, Nether Quarterly, Anthropology and Humanism, Sunflower Collective, Cafe Dissensus. She is an Associate Professor of Social Sciences at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru. Her first book of poems, The Book of Blue, was published by Red River (2024).

Sourav Roy
Poet, Journalist & Translator
Sourav Roy is a bilingual writer, poet, journalist, and translator. He currently works as a teacher at Head Start Educational Academy and has been a visiting faculty at Azim Premji University and NIFT Bengaluru in the past. His published work includes a collection of poetry, Kaal Baisakhi (Vani Prakashan, 2022); edited volumes of poetry and plays, Karnakavita (Atta Galatta, 2015), Teen Natak by Abhishek Majumdar (Bloomsbury, 2018), Tathagat by Abhishek Majumdar LeftWord, 2024); translations of plays and Japanese Haiku, Soho Mein Marx (Rajkamal Prakashan, 2018) and Os Ki Prithvi (Vani Prakashan, 2019) respectively.

Tuhin Bhowal
Writer, Translator & Editor
Tuhin Bhowal is a writer, translator, and editor working between three languages: Hindi, Bengali, and English. Recipient of the Deepankar Khiwani Memorial Poetry Prize 2022, his poems and translations appear or are forthcoming in New Verse Review, Ballast Journal, Redivider, Indian Literature, Poetry at Sangam, and elsewhere. A former mentee with the South Asian Literature in Translation (SALT) project and a Translation Fellow at the South Asia Speaks Mentorship Programme 2025, Tuhin lives alone in Bangalore and tweets @tuhintranslates.

Mani Rao
Poet & Translator
Mani Rao is the author of twelve poetry books including So That You Know (HarperCollins 2025). Her books in translation from Sanskrit include Kalidasa- Selected Poetry and Drama (HarperCollins 2025), Bhagavad Gita (HarperCollins 2023), Saundarya Lahari(HarperCollins 2023). Her translations from Hindi of Anamika’s poetry have been published as Slow Down, River (Red River Press, 2025). Her research into mantras led to the book Living Mantra: Mantra, Deities and Visionary Experience Today (Palgrave Macmillan 2019). Mani was a writing resident at Iowa International Writing Program, Omi Ledig House and International Poetry Studies Institute, Canberra, and has participated in numerous festivals internationally including the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Bangalore Literature Festival.
