K K Hebbar was born on June 15th, 1911 in a village near Udupi. He rose to become a nationally acclaimed Painter. His works are in national and international collections. He donated 65 paintings of his to Karnataka, housed in a separate floor in Venkatappa Gallery. He served as Chairman Karnataka Lalit Kala Academi and Chairman National Lalit Kala Academy. June 15th is Hebbar’s 113th birth anniversary. This event is conceived by K K Hebbar Art Foundation and MAHE. They came together in 2017 to establish ‘Hebbar Gallery and Art Center’ (HGAC) India’s first University Gallery hosting over 30 paintings of India’s famous artist K K Hebbar. In 2024, HGAC produced a film on how Hebbar’s interaction with leading writers, poets, editors of national media brought about a cultural renaissance in the 60’s and 70’s. This film covers Hebbar’s and Karanth’s collaboration to convert a folk dance-drama into a ballet and take it national. This 12 minute film will premiere on June 15th at BIC in the presence of leading artists and art lovers. The film is followed by a live performance of Yakshagana. ‘Kamsa Vadhe’ will be performed by the troupe of Dr. Shivakumar Begar. Trained under Dr. Shivaram Karanth, he has been a Yakshagana performer in the MGM College Udupi troupe. He spent 12 years under Dharmadhikari Veerendra Hegde in Dhrmasthala, starting a Yakshagana school. Currently he is running Yakshagana schools in Bangalore, in Art of Living and other places. He leads a troupe of performers who perform various Yakshagana Dramas. Presented by: Artistes KK Hebbar (1911-1996) Painter Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar was born in 1911 in Karnataka and received his diploma from the Sir JJ School of Art in 1938. He taught art at the School from 1940 to 1945. While being influenced by the academic style taught at the School, Hebbar felt a strong urge to paint in a genre which drew from traditional Indian art. A visit to Europe in 1949 exposed him to some of the best works in western art ans he finally settled down to study at the Académie Julian in Paris. The definitive form begin to take shape in Hebbar’s work on his return from Europe. An adroit draughtsman, he won the National Award in 1956, followed by awards in the annual exhibitions of 1957 and 1958. Hebbar had also received the Gold Medal of the Bombay Art Society in 1990. The Padmashri was awarded to the veteran artist in 1961 and the Padma Bhushan in 1989. He dies at the age of 85 in 1996.
