Kivi Kodi: A Unique Sound Arts Evening in Cox Town

In what should be described as an off-beat urban experiment, the organisers want audiences to engage with sound in “new and meaningful ways”; and they have corralled a range of artists who will showcase their work through performances, workshops, installations, and interactive listening experiences.

In Kannada “kivi kodi” means “listen”—in a lyrical, “lend me your ears” sort of way.

This interesting and unusual event promises to be a rather diverse presentation of beatboxing, “singing bowls”, spoken word, and experimental soundscapes—and the goal is to explore sound as both a medium and a method for creative expression and reflection on the everyday soundscapes around us.

This event is being put together by final-year communication students of Mount Carmel College.

In what should be described as an off-beat urban experiment, the organisers want audiences to engage with sound in “new and meaningful ways”; and they have corralled a range of artists who will showcase their work through performances, workshops, installations, and interactive listening experiences.

They believe that sonic experiences shape our daily lives in subtle ways. Public audio performances are usually things like music, but they feel the broader sonic experiences of an urban environment go unnoticed. And the performances will attempt to fix that: beatboxer Neil Newton with an interactive session, other performers will walk the audience through Hindustani and Western musical scales. And “a sound immersion workshop” by Srinivas Vupadrishta, uses Tibetan singing bowls with meditation techniques to show how it fosters a “calming listening environment”.

The details of the program are available in the event listing and feature a wide range of presentations including installations, spoken word events, and a “sonic film”.

For the students, this event is more than an assignment.

For the always experience-hungry Bangalore culturephile, it promises another engaging evening.
