Nagel in Dutch means “nail” and “kaas” is cheese. Nagelkaas is not cheese made with nails but with cloves. Stepping further into Dutch, “kruidnagel” is the word for cloves which means “spicy nail”.
Nagelkaas is a hard cheese that is kind of a gouda style. It is also known as Frisian Clove Cheese.
Like most hard cheese, this can be eaten as is, paired with a glass of wine or with some bread.
