Located in the Karnataka Government Museum, Venkatappa Art Gallery is a place worth visiting. Not just for art lovers, the rich collection at this gallery is something which will attract everyone. Located on the Kasturba Road, this gallery is just a few minutes of walk away from the MG Road. Next to the building is the Visweshwariah Museum which is also place worth visiting. Spread in two floors, this art gallery boasts of more than 600 paintings. Venkatappa art gallery along with the Archaeological Museum present their visitors with an insight into the past and the artists who belonged to the eras gone by as well as give visitors an opportunity to admire the present works. There are art-works belonging to 2000 BC till the medieval period. The gallery has been dedicated to Venkatappa, a great painter who was born in the family of painters, on whom this gallery has been named. His works are put on display at the ground floor. Not just his, the gallery has been adorned with work of many world famous artists. Some of the artists whose work has been showcased here are M F Hussain, Yusuf Arakkal, N S Bendrem, Hariram, Hanumiah and others. The Old building presents a view into the world of sculptures as it houses stone sculptures which dates back to 12th century AD as well as those from the widely known Khajuraho. A section is also dedicated for showcasing various kinds of excavations. There is also an armory gallery displaying various kinds of swords, daggers, spears, gun-powder holder, bullets which belonged to the medieval period.
