Event Description

This lecture will analyse the use of technology in Indian courts and its impact on the efficiency of courts and access to justice. Justice Muralidhar will sketch the history of the adaptation of technology by the Indian judiciary including the hits and misses. The talk would then shift to the situation in Odisha and the vision for the use of technology in the High Court. He will describe the technological reforms initiated to enhance the efficient working of courts through re-working procedures; the digitisation of old pending and new court records, and the introduction of e-filing and paperless courts and paperless administrative offices of the courts. He will discuss the human side of technological transformation through measures taken to enable participation in the reform measures by court staff, lawyers, and lawyers’ clerks and the impact on litigants and transparency of the judiciary as an institution. The talk will end with a reflection on the challenges ahead including concerns over data security, privacy, accessibility and the proposals for the introduction of AI in the functioning of courts.

In collaboration with: Speaker Justice S Muralidhar Judge Justice Muralidhar served as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court between January 2021 and August 2023. During his 17-year-long tenure, he also served as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Delhi High Court.
