Event Description

In the early 19th century the Maharaja of Banaras undertook an ambitious endeavour by commissioning a masterpiece; a manuscript with lavish embellishment of gold, narrating the Ramayana authored by Tulsidas, written in Awadhi - a popular language of the region. MAP’s upcoming exhibition Book of Gold: The Kanchana Chitra Ramayana of Banaras, curated by the late Kavita Singh and Parul Singh brings together nearly eighty pages from the manuscript - for the first time ever! Exploring the historical context in which it was made, it showcases the diversity of artists involved, and the ingenuity of the narratives they devised for this monumental artistic endeavour.
