Event Description

Dhrupad is one of the oldest pristine art forms that textures the Indian musical system. Join us for an evening of Dhrupad, reimagined by two young and talented Dhrupadiyas.

Murali Mohan Gowda will introduce the basic concepts and techniques of Dhrupad, specifically related to Dagarbani and Raga music in general. He will cover topics including the basic differences between Dhrupad and other forms of Indian classical music, the origin of Dhrupad, the concept of Ragas, structure and improvisational tools, and Talas and compositions.

In the second part of the concert, Shilpa Shankar Narrain will explore unique aspects of Muthuswami Dikshitar’s compositions from a Dhrupad perspective. Considered one of the holy trinity of Carnatic music, Dikshitar traveled far and wide, and it is believed he lived in Varanasi for eight years. During this time, he was greatly influenced by Dhrupad and is known to have composed various kritis with Dhrupad and Hindustani elements. Come and be part of a musical journey that bridges the past and the present, honoring the legacy of Dhrupad while exploring its future possibilities.

Murali Mohan Gowda Dhrupad Musician

Murali started his musical journey a decade ago which took him to various teachers of music from various parts of India. He was trained by Pt. Srinivas Mukashi, a senior disciple Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, on the flute, in Bangalore. Later, he discovered his passion for multiple instruments and joined Dhrupad Sansthan, Bhopal where he spent next ten years learning Dhrupad on the Rudraveena. Murali has travelled to various parts of India and performed at several reputed platforms that include the NCPA, Mumbai, IGNCA, Delhi, Ramakrisna Mission, Golpark, Kolkata, ICCR, Kolkata, Kalakshetra, Chennai, Royal Albert Hall, Jaipur, Sanskriti Bhavan, Patto, Goa, LV Prasad Auditorium, Hyderabad, Sevasadan, Bangalore and Krishnamurthy Foundation India, Bangalore.

Shilpa Shanker Narain Dhrupad Vocalist

Hailing from an illustrious Mathur family from old Delhi, Shilpa was exposed to the nuances of classical and traditional music since her very early years through her father, acclaimed music producer and sarodist Promod Shanker, and other older members of the family. After initially training in Khayal, Shilpa immersed herself in the pursuit of the ancient art form of Dhrupad, under the vision and tutelage of Gurus Padmashri Gundecha Brothers and the able guidance of Shri Sanjeev Jha. She has been actively teaching & performing Dhrupad and experimenting with formats, collaborating with artists in various countries and taking this ancient art form to an international audience. Her strength has been to bring forth uniquely thematic and curated material to her audiences which is at the same time grounded in tradition, enhanced by her extensive dhrupad training and skills. Her music beautifully balances musicianship, tradition and her unique aesthetic.

Ankit Parikh Pakhawaj Artist

Dr. Ankit Parikh is one of the talented Pkhawaj artistes of the country. He has learnt Pakhawaj under Goswami Sri Kalyan Rai Ji Maharaj Sri, the acharya of vallabh sampraday and vidwan of Nana Panse Gharana. Later he moved to Lucknow and took further talim from Dr. Raj Khushiram, disciple of Pakhawaj wizard Swami Pagal das ji. Ankit belongs to temple tradition of Pushti bhakti marg. He is carrying forward the rich tradition of Pakhawaj with dedication and hard work. Ankit has been felicitated with various award for his active participation in promoting Pakhawaj such as Mridang Gaurav award 2019, Junior research fellowship award 2019 by Ministry of Culture, Girnar Ratna award 2017, Taalmani award 2010 etc . Ankit holds a Doctorate in Pakhawaj from Banaras Hindu university. He has been performing in several music festivals of India with renowned artistes like Pt. Ritwik Sanyal, Pt. Gundecha bros., Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, Pt. Nirmalya Dey, Ustad Bahauddin Dagar, Pt. Prem kumar Mallick, Vidushi Madhu bhatt tailing, Pt. Bhajan Sopori, Pt. Abhay Sopori etc. Nowadays he is involved in teaching Pakhawaj to younger generation.
