Event Description

Nine rasas. Nine ragas.

Indrayuddh Majumdar has spent years mapping the fundamental human emotions onto the traditional ragas built to hold them. Trained in the Senia Maihar gharana, he knows where shringar lives in a phrase, where karuna turns, where shanta finally settles.

He walks us through that map. Each rasa has a story, and each story, a raga. With Roopak Kallurkar on tabla, not much is left unsaid.

Part of Pravāha 2026, The Body As Space: A Journey Through The Senses. This year’s festival is built around what we hear, smell, touch, taste, and see. Eight days of multisensory experiences through classical music, contemporary dance, installations, and conversations.

Performers

Indrayudh Majumdar
Sarod
Indrayudh Majumdar is among the most prominent and widely admired sarod players of the younger generation of Indian classical musicians. Known for preserving the purity of the tradition while presenting it with clarity and contemporary sensibility, his performances resonate with listeners across generations, both in India and internationally.

He has trained since the age of five under his father and guru, Padma Shri Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, and represents the Senia Maihar Gharana, founded by the legendary Ustad Allauddin Khan. His musical grounding is further enriched by vocal guidance from his mother, Vidushi Dr. Manasi Majumdar, early training from his grandfather Late Ranjan Majumdar, and advanced laya and taal instruction from Pandit Subhankar Banerjee. This confluence of gayaki, tantrakari, and rhythmic depth shapes the emotional intensity and refinement of his music.

In 2018, Indrayudh became the first Indian recipient of the prestigious Salon di Virtuosi Award (New York). A regular performer across India, the USA, and the UK, he has collaborated widely across genres including Carnatic, jazz, world music, and film, and has composed for cinema, documentaries, and collaborative projects. He is also a co-organiser of the Swara Samrat Festival, one of India’s largest Indian classical music festivals, dedicated to the legacy of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Roopak Kallurkar
Tabla
Roopak Kallurkar began his musical journey at the age of three under the guidance of his father and guru, Pt. Rajagopal Kallurkar, a renowned tabla maestro of the Farukhabad Gharana. Born into a distinguished musical family, with his mother Smt. Vijayalaxmi Kallurkar being a respected Hindustani classical vocalist, Roopak was immersed in music from an early age. His training later expanded to include Carnatic rhythm under Vid. Kulloor Jayachandra Rao, enabling him to skillfully integrate rhythmic systems across traditions.

A “B High” graded artist of All India Radio and recipient of the CCRT Scholarship from the Government of India, Roopak has established himself as a powerful soloist and a sensitive accompanist. His performances are marked by technical brilliance, rhythmic imagination, and emotional depth, and he has appeared at major festivals and cultural platforms including the Sankat Mochan Festival, Sangeet Natak Akademi programmes, World Jazz Festival, Banyan Tree Festival, and several others across India.

Equally at ease in classical, contemporary, and global contexts, Roopak has collaborated with leading Hindustani and Carnatic musicians, Kathak dancers, fusion ensembles, and international groups. With hundreds of recordings and television appearances to his credit, he is also deeply committed to pedagogy through the Kallur Mahalaxmi Tabla Vidyalaya, continuing a legacy of teaching and mentorship that spans generations while shaping the future of tabla practice.
