Event Description

A piece of music can be considered a pattern in time… the strange thing is that it doesn’t exist until it is being played… A great work also captures something of the era in which it was written and then travels through time via aural tradition… or in the notated form to be performed hundreds of years later. Patterns in Time, a range of music from the 16th century to the present, takes the audience through a journey not only through time but also through geographies and cultures from all over the world.

The concert begins with Spanish music inspired by the Andalusian flamenco tradition and will proceed to Renaissance and Baroque standards by Dowland, Scarlatti and Bach. This will be followed by an extended and programmatic avant-garde composition by the guitar virtuoso Pavel Steidl. The second half of the recital will set off with some refreshingly tropical South American music and some tunes by Indian composers. This will be followed by music inspired by Turkey and end with Shamal, an improvisatory piece consisting of extended techniques and percussion featuring a blend of sonorities and rhythms from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

Performer

Sidharth Sarangi Guitarist

Sidharth Sarangi is a 20-year-old classical guitarist and pianist from Odisha, India. Born in 2004, Sidharth started guitar lessons at age 9 in the Rock and Pop style. Gradually he developed an interest in the Western classical style and learnt classical guitar music under the tutelage of Mr. Thangadurai Samuel. Sidharth has since won prizes at several national and international competitions. He stood first at the Global Guitar Gita international guitar festival and competition where he was the winner of the Grand Prize, apart from prizes at the Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival and Competition and other national competitions and events. In 2022, he became the first person from the country to have been accepted for undergraduate studies in guitar at the Royal College of Music in London. Sidharth’s repertoire consists of eclectic and diverse pieces ranging from original arrangements of Bach’s keyboard partitas to more modern music by composers such as Gary Ryan, Sergio Assad, Leo Brouwer, Pavel Steidl and Frederic Rzewski. His affinity for avant-garde pieces is evident in his transcriptions and interpretations of pieces by modern composers. Sidharth has performed at various venues all over the country.

Highlights include recitals at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, ICCR Calcutta, and recently at the Cottage Chamber Concert series in Mysore among others. Lately, Sidharth has also been active in pedagogy and has been actively conducting workshops and masterclasses to promote the classical guitar repertoire amongst other guitarists and musicians in general.

In addition to performance, Sidharth also composes and arranges from time to time and has written and arranged pieces for the solo guitar and piano repertoire. Sidharth is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in electronics engineering and enjoys swimming in his free time.
