Event Description

What can a film poster reveal when we take the time to really look at it?

Facilitated by Rajesh Devraj and Ashish Rajadhyaksha, this intimate, off-the-cuff session invites participants to gather around a table and closely examine a selection of film posters, unpacking the many layers contained within each image. Through conversation and collective looking, we’ll explore the artistic styles, printing techniques, regional variations, typography, visual conventions and business strategies that shaped these objects—and the ways in which they communicated with audiences.

Rajesh Devraj is a writer and researcher based in Mumbai. He has written a book on the history of Hindi film posters, The Art of Bollywood (Taschen, 2010) and a forthcoming biography of the silent-film pioneer, Baburao Painter.

Ashish Rajadhyaksha
Facilitator

Ashish Rajadhyaksha is a film historian, and an occasional art curator. He is the author of the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (with Paul Willemen, 1994/1999), Indian Cinema from the Time of Celluloid: From Bollywood to the Emergency (2009) and John-Ghatak-Tarkovsky: Citizens, Filmmakers, Hackers (2023).
