Event Description

Dhrupad is the spring boat of the Indian Classical Music. It is the mother of all Indian music genres. The roots of Dhrupad are ancient. It is a term of Sanskrit origin, derived from dhruva (ध्रुव, immovable, permanent) and pada (पद, verse).  It is discussed in the Hindu Sanskrit text Natyashastra (~200 BCE – 200 CE).  It emphasises on the purity of the musical notes and slowly describes the characteristic of the Raga.

Dhrupad is presented both by singing (vocal) and playing instruments with the accompaniment of Pakhawaj (percussion). Dhrupad framework consists of 3 phases- Aalap, Jhod and Pada (composition). One of the primary instruments which is used in Dhrupad is Surbahar (base Sitar).

Sourabrata will take you to the journey of the ancient tradition of Dhrupad music which promises to elevate the inner-self to the realm of calmness and spirituality. He will be accompanied on Pakhawaj by Abhijit.
